how it began

Our founder, Toby LaVigne, knows what it's like to be a young professional seeking guidance and opportunity. Toby started as a commercial fishing deckhand at 12 and, by 19, became a captain.  He thrived on hard work and impressed the older men he worked with.  Meanwhile, back in school, he struggled with boredom.  The two worlds sent him completely opposite messages of his worth and potential. This experience ignited a lifelong passion for personal and professional development as he searched for answers to big questions:

  • What is success really?

  • What are the rules?

  • How do I play to my strengths in the game of life and business?

Thanks to a well-timed business owner mentor, Toby learned that he was a natural leader and an entrepreneurial leader. He skipped the corporate route and went straight to building two businesses, later coaching executives, and leading a successful turnaround.

Toby understands the value of key people—those who step up, lead, and lighten the load. He saw firsthand how mentorship, a high-quality network (30 years in YPO), and meaningful challenges can change the course of a career. He launched Maverick Works to offer the kind of transformative experience he benefited from—an experience rooted in connection, challenge, and real-world impact.

About the founder - Toby Lavigne

If I were in your shoes right now, I’d want to know who was behind Maverick Works.

I created Maverick Works—the organization I wish existed when I began my career to be THE place for young professionals to get the clarity, mentorship, peer network, and leadership system they need to increase their impact and accelerate their careers. 

I began working at a young age as a commercial fishing deckhand, and by the time I was 19, I had become a captain. I’ve worked in construction as a licensed contractor, built my own houses by hand, ranched, and more. I began paying my dues early.

I’m a typical example of a generalist student with leadership and entrepreneurial DNA. I struggled in school, but thrived outside it in my work. Along the way, I got confusing messages about the definition of success and the means of achieving it.  My teachers judged me by my grades, and my employers judged me by my work ethic.

By the time I graduated from college, I had little idea how to start my career and very little practical guidance. If you’d asked me at the time what I was going to do professionally, I’d have said, “I’m going to be a fisherman.” But that took a sharp turn when a very successful businessman I met on the docks took me aside and showed me a different world and gave me a chance to realize my natural leadership and work skills in a totally different arena.

Around this time, I encountered all kinds of leadership books - I went from a non-reader to a voracious one - and wondered why this knowledge wasn’t included in my schooling, which included a top Ivy League business school.

As soon as I could afford it, I began a decades-long journey in organizations like YPO and The Strategic Coach, not to mention countless seminars, speaking events, training events, and consuming all manner of online and offline professional development. That experience taught me what works and what doesn’t. Maverick Works is like a greatest hits membership organization for young talent with leadership potential.

My CEO/Owner experience includes two printing-related companies: LVI and HubCast, as well as a manufacturing turnaround and a stint as a CXO in the firearms industry spanning over 30+ years.  Team sizes ranged from 30 to over 300 operating 24/7/365.  There are few things in business I haven’t dealt with personally, and even fewer that I haven’t had a ringside seat to through my YPO peers.

I’ve been in the ditches and I’ve been in the corner office.  I know what it’s like to own and lead a business, I know what I prized in my top team members, and I know how to teach young professionals how to realize their potential as a leader who gets important things done right.

At this point, late in my career, my passion is helping people unlock their unique gifts, clarify their personal calling, and apply simple, powerful systems to create freedom, confidence, and meaningful success—personally and professionally.
